16 November 2011 – Rhino Remembrance Day on Amakhala Game Reserve

Today we pay tribute to Chippy and Isipho, our two Rhino bulls that were murdered a year ago today!

SAVE OUR RHINOS - for the future generations!

Today Is November 16th. To most it is just another day closer to Christmas. Here on Amakhala Game Reserve it is a day we remember the loss of two members of our quaint and quirky family. Chippy and isipho were two members of our family that this time last year were found murdered, their faces hacked off and their bodies left to rot.  They were not of course people they were rhino’s. However they were not just any rhino’ they were our rhino’s. Rhino’s we had tried our best to protect but tragically our best at this point was simply not enough. But we are not alone. Only last Monday our neighbours discovered a female and her calf butchered. The female did not make it her little calf is battling for survival.  We are a reserve, a country, a continent that is fighting an almost invisible enemy. This enemy consists of our own people, people from lands so far removed from Africa that we feel so aggrieved that they dare to come here.  To try and understand why this massacre is happening is just impossible. These are not poor African’s trying to make a few rand these are organised syndicates looking to make millions. They have no morals, no values, and no soul. They are raping Africa of its most valuable source. What do we do? We feel we are fighting a losing battle, every day there is another new incident, four rhinos killed here, a game farmer involved there. We hear that the government has arrested a couple of Thai poacher’s hooray you may say, but these people were previously arrested fined, sent home and low and behold they return. It is now time to put an end to this. If we do not make a stand now it will be too late.  Africa boasts of its big 5 collection. However, the big four, the big three, the big two and finally the big one I feel will definitely close Africa’s doors forever.
